Cassettes
This project was the result of both an interest with exploring the mundane and 'uninteresting' to gain a more intimate and personal understanding of a person along with an exploration of the medium of portraiture. Candid photographs were taken of subjects performing day-to-day tasks--eating, finishing homework, working in the studio, etc.--while a tape recorder captured conversation between them and myself. Selected images were printed onto cassette tapes and accompanying J-cards, containing a 5-minute snip of audio from the shoot--encouraging a deeper, more personal 'portrait' of not only the subject's external appearance but internal thoughts and emotions, as well, free from what may be a more constructed and carefully curated self-image in the case of more traditional studio portraiture.
