The Transistor
This project was a confluence of a longstanding interest in computer science and its history and newly discovered passions in printing and bookmaking--a reframing of the artist's book in the era of digital media. The piece is partially a result of experimenting with the idea of what a book can be--in this case, a microcomputer containing a program emulating pre-Internet bulletin board systems accompanies two traditional books inside a box designed as packaging from an imaginary manufacturer, text on a screen and user interface taking the place of pages in a book. "The Transistor" was also the culmination of an obsession with interactive art--its presentation was less installation and more invitation for audience interaction, the idea of a bedroom suggesting a safe, secure space both reflecting and encouraging reflection on themes in the work.
